Pregnancy
and Acrylic Nails
In 1997, I began educating nail technicians and
the public regarding chemicals used in the nail care
industry. Since then, there is one question I have
been asked numerous times, which is, “I am pregnant.
Can the chemicals used to make acrylic nails
harm my unborn baby?”
The operative word being 'CAN'. The answer is,
"YES". The chemicals used to create acrylic
nails CAN harm your unborn baby. Any answer other than “YES
THEY CAN” has, in my opinion, been given in complete
and total dishonesty or out of plain ignorance.
Reason being…

Acetone Explosion
It was March of 2001, I had just received the April
edition of NAILS magazine, a well known trade publication.
As I read the magazine, I came across an article about
a nail technician who experienced an acetone accident.
The article stated that on January 9, 2001 a nail technician
was heating acetone in a glass bowl in the salon microwave,
when the acetone ignited…

Don't Be Fooled!
Okay, so you want to have your nails done.
You are not sure where to go or what to do. You have
heard “horror” stories from people on
the news, on the radio, and you have read articles
in the newspaper.
When you get done reading this chapter, you will be able
to determine whether or not you are being “fooled” about
the type of nail enhancement products that are being
used on you.
Due to the ongoing media attention, certain nail care products
have had recently (and in years past), more and more manufacturers
are promoting “new” products and new ways of
applying them. The most recent is…

Why The Mask?
If I have heard this question once, I have heard it
a million times.
You want to know why so many manicurists wear a mask
when they are using acrylic nail chemicals on you. Well,
here is your answer:
Most manicurists wear a mask hoping to protect themselves
from…

Electric Files
(Drills, Sanders or Grinders); Are They Safe?
Have you ever been hurt by a manicurist who used
a drill on you?
A drill is known in the nail care industry as an electric
file, e-file, or electric hand file. It is better known
to the public (unfortunately) as a sander, grinder or
Dremel.
Have you ever been burned? Have you ever been cut? Have
you ever experienced red lines on your nail plate (known
as rings of fire) after your manicurist has
used a drill on your nails?
If you have ever experienced any of these, chances are
you have been worked on by a technician who has not had
appropriate training or worse yet …

Nurses and Nails;
Death In The NICU
Several years ago, hospitals and other medical facilities
across the country began revising their dress code policies
in regard to employees who wore artificial nail care
products on their fingernails and those who have long
natural nails who also have direct contact with patients.
Why you ask? ...
